Pack Mentality: Season 2 Part 8
As Jackson recognized that one wolf he whispered "Rick,"
"Yeah" Rick answered.
"I recognize this one."
"You Sure?"
"Yep."
"Hold on a second, I am going to make a call."
"Ok," Jackson replied.
Jackson had so many questions flying through his head. The main one being how he knew it was Heart Lake, but then he remembered Raven, Quint, and George. The had left to find their original pack not long ago, but then they returned because their pack had... Separated. That does it. Jackson thought to himself.
Rick was off of the phone after around a half hour and then said, "we are heading on a road trip. I recommend you pack some clothes. Who knows when we will be back. Let's get Bramble and a couple of other wolves. We are going to go on and scout out heart lake and see what is going on over there. This will give us a better perspective into what is going on over there because a wolfs sense of smell is 100 times better than ours. I will also grab us a tent, and a compass so we won't get lost.
Jackson grabbed his backpack and suitcase and threw it into the back of the cab. It was bound to be exciting maneuvering through the woods in this vehicle, Jackson thought to himself. After about 10 minutes, Rick joined him. The first stop was to pick up the wolves that were going to be joining them. Bramble was first, Followed by Ash, Matt, and Miles. The group then headed out to find the missing packs.
After driving for close to a half hour, they arrived at the lake. They stepped out of the vehicle and were greeted by a defining silence. They had stopped on a peninsula and just to their east there was a mountain, and to their west was a larger hill. Sitting in between the two was the lake. "Ok, so what now?" Jackson asked.
"Well, I suggest that we set up a tent here, and let the wolves search for a bit, while you and I set up the campsite, and explore the local area. Rick dropped the tailgate, and then the wolves jumped off the back and paired off. Bramble and Ash were one group, and Matt and Miles were the other. Bramble and Ash headed to the east, and then the other headed to the west, leaving Jackson and Rick at the site.
They had finished setting up the campsite and then headed off going the same direction that Bramble and Ash had gone, but the two of them went further in the truck. Once they decided on an area they started to search. It was a really quiet afternoon or rather too quiet. In the area that Jackson and Rick were searching, they had not seen any population of the wolves primary diet. The thought was really disheartening. They followed the loop trail for a little bit, but once it turned straight west, they turned off of it, and Rich turned the Truck to four-wheel drive, keeping a close eye on the gas tank.
Every now and then, the two of them hopped out of the Truck and searched a little further. That was the story of the rest of the day. Once Rick started to notice the sun starting to get low, he turned to Jackson that it was time to head back. Jackson did not protest, as the two of them had been on their feet for the majority of the day. Even though he was a runner, Jackson's legs were still really sore. Rick started a fire, and then pulled a cooler and pulled out a container of hot dogs and then some roasting sticks. Jackson then asked, "How long are we going to be here?"
"I do not know." Rick replied, "Maybe when we find some strong evidence that there is a proof of life. Even then, maybe longer, because we have to find the other packs and then help them find a suitable place to thrive."
"But how will we make that happen?"
"I do not know. I truly do not know." Then an elongated silence followed ended by some rustling of the bushes by where they were. Rick raced to the truck and grabbed his rifle and flashlight, and tossed Jackson's crossbow to him. The two of them waited in anticipation for what was to come hoping that it was one of their wolves. Then Ash came exploding through the bushes.
